WhatsApp is moving closer to modern social platforms by testing a username-based chat system, allowing users to connect without revealing their phone numbers. The feature is being spotted in the latest Android beta (v2.25.28.12), where users can reserve unique usernames before the feature rolls out publicly.Since its launch in 2009, WhatsApp has always depended on phone numbers for registration and finding contacts. But now, the platform is taking a big step toward more privacy and flexibility — similar to Telegram’s username system.
The current beta allows some users to reserve a username rather than chat with it yet. This early reservation helps WhatsApp manage demand and prevent popular names from being snatched unfairly.
WhatsApp is also setting strict username rules
Must include at least one letter
Can only use lowercase letters (a–z), numbers, dots (.), and underscores (_)
Cannot begin with “www.”to avoid confusion with web links
Additionally, a four-digit “username key” will be required to connect with someone. This means even if someone knows your username, they’ll still need your key — offering an extra layer of privacy.
Meta is also testing AI features, smarter call scheduling for professionals, and a new anti-spam policy.
Under the new system, users who repeatedly message people that don’t respond may face a monthly message limit, reducing spam and unwanted promotions.
These efforts aim to make WhatsApp more secure, private, and user-friendly, marking one of the biggest updates since the app’s early days.
