India has emerged as a global leader in the effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday work, according to Microsoft’s ‘Work Trend Index 2026’. The report, based on research across 10 major markets including the US, Australia, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and Brazil, found that India has the highest level of AI-enabled professionals. Around 32% of Indian AI users are employing AI agents for complex, multi-step workflows, twice the global average of 16%. As many as 78% of Indian users said AI is helping them accomplish tasks they could not do previously, compared with the global average of 58%.
Indian professionals are also placing strong emphasis on human oversight while using AI. About 63% prioritise quality control and 59% focus on critical thinking. Nearly 87% said they continue to retain decision-making authority and use AI output as a starting point rather than a final result. AI adoption is also expanding rapidly across India’s IT services sector. Infosys, TCS, Wipro and LTIMindtree collectively secured more than 400,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot seats within six months. Wipro employees have developed more than 29,000 AI agents, while TCS reported a 20–25% rise in productivity in research and content functions following AI adoption.
