A visually striking bird with a bright orange hue and a contrasting green underbody has been spotted in the Kawal Tiger Reserve, drawing attention from wildlife enthusiasts. Identified as the Orange-Green Pigeon, this species is known for its vibrant plumage and aesthetic appeal. Typically found in the northeastern regions of India and across Southeast Asia, the sighting of this bird in Telangana is considered significant. Its unique coloration makes it one of the most attractive members of the pigeon family.
According to forest officials, the species primarily feeds on fruits and is often seen around fig and banyan trees. Interestingly, it can also consume fruits of toxic plants that are harmful to many mammals. Jannaram Forest Divisional Officer M. Ram Mohan stated that these birds play a role in forest ecology by aiding seed dispersal. Their presence in the reserve highlights the rich biodiversity of the region and underscores the importance of conserving natural habitats.
