A global oil crisis has emerged due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Earlier expectations of a resolution were raised due to diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and peace talks between the United States and Iran. However, recent assessments suggest that the situation may continue for at least another six months. According to a recent Pentagon report, it may take up to six months to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil transportation.
Reports in international media state that a secret meeting was held between the Pentagon and US lawmakers, where the Defense Intelligence Agency presented key findings. The report highlights that Iranian-laid sea mines are the main obstacle in reopening the strait. It estimates that Iran may have placed 20 or more mines, some of which were reportedly deployed using GPS technology in remote areas, making detection and removal extremely challenging. The full clearance operation can only be completed after the conflict with Iran ends, though the Pentagon has not issued any official confirmation yet.
