OTT platforms are playing a crucial role in the modern film distribution system, with the gap between theatrical release and digital streaming once again becoming a hot topic in the industry. The debate between a four-week and eight-week OTT release window has sparked differing opinions among producers, distributors, and exhibitors. While theatre owners are demanding a longer gap for big films to protect box office revenue, producers prefer a shorter window to quickly monetize digital rights.
During a recent South Indian producers’ meeting, many Telugu and Tamil filmmakers reportedly opposed the eight-week window, supporting a four-week OTT release cycle instead. They cited changing audience behavior and the rapid growth of OTT subscriptions as key reasons. However, theatre owners are concerned that this shift may reduce theatrical footfall. The discussions are expected to continue between producers, distributors, and exhibitors, with industry experts predicting that the four-week OTT release trend may become dominant in South Indian cinema in the future.
