Chinese President Xi Jinping met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the afternoon of September 12 local time on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The two leaders held a sincere and in-depth discussion and reached important consensus that China and India should be partners rather than rivals. Xi said China approaches its relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective, noting that bilateral institutional exchanges have resumed, cooperation has expanded and trade has reached a new high.
Xi outlined four key areas for the steady development of China-India relations, including maintaining an objective strategic outlook, strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation, resolving differences through mutual respect and understanding, and enhancing multilateral coordination. Modi said India also views its relationship with China from a strategic and long-term perspective and wants the two countries to remain partners. He emphasized that India's independent foreign policy is not influenced by any third party and said both sides should strengthen high level exchanges, economic cooperation and people to people ties while maintaining peace along the border. India also expressed support for China's BRICS chairship next year and closer cooperation on Global South issues.
