A surprising remark by BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy has sparked a wave of criticism across Telangana. At a time when people are demanding safer, better roads, his statement claiming that “smooth roads cause more accidents” has drawn sharp reactions from the public and social media users alike. The controversy comes in the backdrop of the recent Mirzaguda bus accident, which reignited discussions on the poor condition of highways and the urgent need for repairs. Local residents from Tandur staged a protest demanding the immediate reconstruction of the Hyderabad–Tandur National Highway, alleging that nearly 200 people have lost their lives in accidents along the route.
While citizens and local leaders were calling for new, safer roads, Konda Vishweshwar Reddy’s statement took a completely different direction. He reportedly said that when roads are in good condition, drivers tend to overspeed, leading to more accidents — whereas bad roads, filled with potholes, make people drive slower and thus “reduce accidents.” This comment, however, hasn’t gone down well with the public. Many pointed out that potholes are a major reason for road mishaps, especially at night when they are not visible. Critics argued that such statements are irresponsible, particularly coming from an educated and experienced political leader.
As the backlash grows online, it remains to be seen whether Konda Vishweshwar Reddy will clarify or stand by his controversial comment. For now, his statement has turned into a trending topic — and a source of memes and mockery across Telangana’s social media circles.
