Case Registered Against Rahul Gandhi

A case has been registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, following a complaint filed by Amit Kumar, a member of the local Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Samiti belonging to the Valmiki community. The case is linked to a political controversy over the alleged purification of a stage where Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had participated in a public meeting. Reacting to the incident, Rahul Gandhi had demanded that an SC/ST atrocities case be registered against those involved in the purification of the stage, alleging that inappropriate behaviour had taken place because Kharge is a Dalit.

The complainant alleged that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks had hurt the sentiments of his community, stating that people from different communities had participated in cleaning the stage and that there was no connection between the activity and Kharge’s caste. Based on the complaint, police reportedly registered a case under allegations related to promoting enmity between communities, hurting religious sentiments and provisions of the SC/ST Act. Responding to the development, Rahul Gandhi described cases filed against him as being like medals on his chest. Meanwhile, the BJP strongly criticised him and the Gandhi family over the controversy.
