The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an unconditional public apology for publishing controversial content about the judiciary in a Class 8 textbook. In an official statement released on Tuesday, NCERT stated that the content appeared in Chapter 4 titled “Role of Judiciary in Our Society” in the Social Science textbook Exploring Society: India and Beyond (Part-2) for Grade 8. The council clarified that the Director and all members sincerely apologize without any justification for publishing the content and confirmed that the book has been completely withdrawn and is no longer available.
The controversy erupted after a chapter referring to “Corruption in the Judiciary” was included in the book. Responding strongly to the issue, Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant expressed serious concern and warned that no institution would be allowed to defame the judiciary. Following the Supreme Court’s sharp reaction, NCERT took immediate corrective steps and withdrew the textbook from circulation.
