A cargo ship identified as Ever Lovely was reportedly attacked near the coast of Oman, just hours after Iran warned that ships using routes against its interests would not be guaranteed safety. The incident has raised fresh concerns over maritime security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. British maritime authorities confirmed the attack, while two senior US officials reportedly stated that Iran was likely involved. However, Iran has not officially claimed responsibility for the incident.
Following the attack, the United Nations and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) temporarily suspended escort operations for commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The UN is also reviewing the safety of hundreds of ships and thousands of seafarers currently in the region. Experts warn that even minor disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact global oil supplies and affect the world economy.
