The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently made a major call by removing Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain and appointing young opener Shubman Gill as the new leader. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has shed light on the reasoning behind this move, which has now become a hot topic in Indian cricket circles.
Agarkar said, “It’s never easy to remove a successful captain like Rohit. But looking at the future of Indian cricket, we felt it was important to give the next leader enough time. The ODI format is played less frequently these days, so we wanted to prepare Gill well in advance for the 2027 World Cup.”
“It’s nearly impossible to have three different captains for three different formats. Planning becomes more coherent under one leadership. This decision was taken after discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia,” Agarkar revealed.
Even though India won the Champions Trophy under Rohit’s leadership, that success didn’t influence the selectors’ long-term vision.
Agarkar said, “Even if he hadn’t won the trophy, this would still have been a difficult call. Rohit has done so much for Indian cricket, but sometimes change is necessary for the team’s future.”
At just 26, Shubman Gill has already led India in Tests with maturity and composure. The BCCI views him as the face of the next generation of Indian cricket. Keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be held in South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe, in mind, Agarkar’s plan is to give Gill enough experience and exposure.
“We wanted to give the new captain sufficient time to grow into the role. Our goal is to ensure Gill gets enough games to build confidence and bond with the team as a leader,” Agarkar said.
New head coach Gautam Gambhir, along with Agarkar and Saikia, have been working closely to restructure the team. According to sources, the trio envisions building Gill as a long-term captain across all formats, marking the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket.
