Trump Pushes for Lake Ontario Name Change on Apple Maps

U.S. President Donald Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” on Apple Maps, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. Burgum said Trump personally contacted Apple about the change and expressed confidence that the new name could soon appear on the company’s mapping platform.

Trump signed an executive order on August 27 renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for U.S. government naming purposes through the Geographic Names Information System. Google Maps has already adopted the new name for users in the United States, while people in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario”. The U.S. designation does not change Canada’s naming conventions.

Apple Maps was still showing “Lake Ontario” for users as of Monday, and Apple had not officially commented on Trump’s request. The dispute has attracted attention amid broader trade tensions between the United States and Canada. While the U.S. can change the official name used within its own government systems, that decision does not automatically apply to Canada or determine how the lake is named internationally.
