PhonePe has made UPI 123Pay available for feature phone users, allowing them to access digital payment services even without an internet connection. The initiative is designed to bring digital transactions to millions of people who do not use smartphones or have access to fast data connectivity, particularly those living in rural and low-connectivity areas.
Through UPI 123Pay, users can make payments through IVR by calling a designated toll-free number, use supported app-based options on feature phones, make payments through missed calls followed by voice instructions and use proximity-based sound technology. The service also allows users to pay utility bills such as electricity and mobile recharges, check their bank balance and create or change their UPI PIN. The service supports multiple languages, making it easier for users to follow instructions in regional languages. It is part of the UPI 123Pay initiative introduced by the Reserve Bank of India and the National Payments Corporation of India, with PhonePe adapting the service for its customers.
