Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed India’s 7.8% GDP growth recorded in the first quarter of financial year 2026-27. The April-June growth rate exceeded market expectations as well as the Reserve Bank of India’s earlier projection. Modi described the performance as a reflection of India’s collective strength and resilience despite global uncertainty, higher oil prices and supply chain disruptions.
In a social media message, Modi criticised what he described as negative narratives about India’s economy, using the phrase “jhooth ki goonj”. The remark has been viewed in political circles as a reference to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatron Ki Goonj” outreach campaign. Modi also renewed his call for “Swadeshi”, urging Indians to give preference to domestic products and services and reduce non essential spending abroad, including foreign travel and destination weddings.
Official data showed that manufacturing grew 9.2% and the services sector expanded 10% during the quarter. Real GDP growth stood at 7.8%, while Gross Value Added rose 8.2%. Strong domestic consumption, investment, manufacturing and services activity supported the economy. Economists said the stronger than expected numbers could improve the outlook for growth during the rest of the financial year.
