In a dramatic turn of events, JioStar has formally informed the ICC that it will not be able to continue its media-rights agreement for the 2024–27 cycle. The deal, valued at nearly USD 3 billion, included the broadcast of major ICC events such as the 2026 T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. JioStar’s decision comes after the company reportedly suffered heavy losses in its OTT and sports broadcasting business, leading it to withdraw from the remaining two years of the contract.
Following the sudden exit, the ICC has approached several global broadcasting and OTT giants, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Sony Pictures Networks India, to take over the rights. However, the high contract value has so far discouraged potential buyers, leaving the future of ICC event telecasts in uncertainty. This unexpected development has raised concerns among cricket fans in India about where they will be able to watch upcoming international tournaments.
