Indian stock markets extended their losing streak on Tuesday, with the benchmark Sensex and Nifty indices closing lower. Rising tensions in West Asia pushed international crude oil prices sharply higher, putting pressure on domestic equities and weighing on investor sentiment.
The Sensex fell 555.23 points, or 0.73%, to close at 75,577.58. The Nifty 50 declined 144.05 points, or 0.61%, and settled at 23,635.10. The decline reflected the impact of renewed geopolitical concerns and the resulting increase in crude oil prices.
Market breadth remained weak, with 2,174 stocks ending in the red, compared with 2,025 stocks that closed higher. The prices of 178 shares remained unchanged during the session.
