Rebel Star Prabhas enjoys a massive fan following worldwide, but a song from one of his films released nearly two decades ago has now unexpectedly become a global sensation. The song ‘Bharatha Vedamuga’ from the 2006 film ‘Pournami’, starring Prabhas, Trisha and Charmy Kaur, has gone viral after Chinese dancer Meera Wang performed a classical dance to it. Her expressions and graceful movements have impressed Telugu audiences as well as several celebrities on social media.
Although ‘Pournami’ did not achieve the expected success at the box office, its songs have remained popular among music lovers. ‘Bharatha Vedamuga’, written by Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry and sung by K.S. Chithra, was composed by Devi Sri Prasad in the Chandrakauns raga. Charmy Kaur’s classical dance performance to the song was widely appreciated when the film was released, with theatres reportedly echoing with applause and cheers.
Meera Wang’s latest performance has brought renewed attention to the song. Despite never having visited India, she has developed a strong passion for Kuchipudi and identifies Ala Venkata Gopal from Anantapur as her Kuchipudi guru. She regularly shares videos of herself performing classical dances to Telugu film songs and has also danced to iconic tracks such as ‘Aaha Naa Pellanta’ from ‘Mayabazar’.
Directed by Prabhu Deva, ‘Pournami’ featured Kuchipudi and traditional arts as important elements of its story. The fact that a film that received only a moderate response at the time of its release is attracting global attention nearly two decades later because of one of its songs has delighted Telugu cinema fans. Meera Wang’s performance has received widespread appreciation from Indian audiences online, with many praising her dedication to Indian classical dance.
