A major fire broke out at the Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s former mountain retreat in Germany’s Bavarian Alps, on the night of October 23, 2026. Emergency services were alerted after a fire alarm was triggered, but firefighters faced difficulties reaching and tackling the blaze because of the site’s remote location, snowfall and strong winds. The building, known in German as the Kehlsteinhaus, was engulfed in flames when emergency crews arrived. No injuries were reported, and firefighters found no one inside the building. The historic structure suffered extensive damage.
German police arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of arson. Authorities reportedly observed signs of possible mental illness and transferred him to a hospital for further assessment. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the fire, including whether it may have had a political motive; no motive has been confirmed. Located about 1,834 metres above sea level, the Eagle’s Nest was built in the late 1930s for the Nazi leadership. Since 1952, the site has operated as a restaurant and historical exhibition documenting its connection to the Nazi era.
