India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma continued his impressive run in T20 International cricket by achieving a rare milestone during the second T20I against New Zealand in Christchurch. He became the first Indian opener to score 1,000 runs in T20Is in a single calendar year. Overall, he became the third Indian batter to reach the mark, following Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 1,164 runs in 2022, and Ishan Kishan, who recorded 1,159 runs in 2026. Abhishek also became the eighth batter in men’s T20I history to cross 1,000 runs in a calendar year.
Abhishek added another record to his name by becoming the first batter to hit 100 sixes during the powerplay in T20 Internationals. Rohit Sharma is second on the list with 98 powerplay sixes, followed by New Zealand’s Martin Guptill with 97, Paul Stirling with 94 and Quinton de Kock with 87. Abhishek was dismissed for 27 off 21 balls in the match, hitting three fours and one six. Despite the relatively short innings, he reached the two notable milestones.
