Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Gujarat has introduced a new safety measure in its student hostels by installing 354 specially designed anti-suicide fans. According to the information shared about the initiative, each fan costs around ₹1,500 and contains a spring mechanism designed to release under excessive pressure. When a load of more than approximately 10 kilograms is applied, the mechanism allows the fan to detach and drop, while its electrical supply is cut off. The measure is intended to reduce the risk of fatal incidents involving ceiling fans in hostel rooms. University Vice-Chancellor Dr Kishorsinh Chavda reportedly demonstrated the mechanism in a hostel room to show how it works.
The initiative has drawn attention amid concerns about academic pressure and student mental health. While some have welcomed the university’s effort to improve physical safety, others have pointed out that specialised fans alone cannot address the underlying causes of student suicides. They have called for accessible counselling, timely psychological support and a campus environment where students feel comfortable discussing personal and academic difficulties. The initiative highlights the importance of combining practical safety measures with mental health awareness, early intervention and ongoing support for students.
