West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed profound shock following the resignation of Governor CV Ananda Bose. While stating that she was unaware of the specific reasons behind his sudden decision, she suggested that political pressure from Union Ministers might be the cause, especially with the state Assembly elections approaching. The Chief Minister noted that while the situation is surprising, the current political climate makes such developments unfortunately predictable.
The Chief Minister strongly criticized the Central Government for allegedly bypassing the state administration in appointing Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi as the new Governor of West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee claimed that she was not consulted regarding either the removal of the outgoing Governor or the appointment of the successor. She termed this move as a violation of the "Constitutional Spirit" and urged the Centre to respect the principles of cooperative federalism and the dignity of individual states.
CV Ananda Bose served as the Governor of West Bengal for three and a half years, a period often characterized by public disagreements and a fractured relationship with the state government. This ongoing friction has been a primary reason for Mamata Banerjee’s vocal opposition to the current gubernatorial system. Currently in Delhi, Bose is reportedly in discussions with Union Ministers regarding his resignation, even as the state gears up for the notification of the upcoming Assembly elections.
