R. Narayana Murthy Reacts to Censor Controversy Over ‘Comrade Kalyan’

Veteran actor R. Narayana Murthy said the film industry provides livelihoods and opportunities to thousands of people and should not be subjected to unnecessary hurdles by the censor board. He observed that while some films containing objectionable scenes and dialogues are allegedly allowed without much intervention, certain movies without such content face objections. He made the remarks at the teaser launch event of Sree Vishnu-starrer ‘Comrade Kalyan’.

Narayana Murthy said he had learnt that the censor board had raised objections to the word ‘Comrade’ in the film’s title. Describing cinema as one of the most powerful forms of mass communication, he said films reflect contemporary society and provide both entertainment and knowledge. He also argued that filmmakers who invest crores of rupees should not be subjected to mental distress and appealed to censor authorities not to unnecessarily obstruct films, stressing that cinema is a form of freedom of expression and a constitutional right.
