Telangana Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has urged the central government to extend support for maize farmers by including the crop under the Price Support Scheme (PSS). He wrote a letter to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan requesting immediate intervention. Despite higher cultivation and production this season, falling market prices have put farmers under pressure. The current rates are significantly below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), leading to potential losses for farmers.
The state government has already initiated procurement measures to support farmers and had taken similar steps in the past. However, due to higher production this season, the situation demands stronger intervention from the Centre.
The minister requested the central government to procure a substantial portion of the produce under PSS and ensure MSP benefits reach farmers.
