Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic suffered a surprise defeat in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament. Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff defeated the fourth-seeded Djokovic 6-7(4), 7-5, 7-6(5) in a thrilling contest lasting two hours and 35 minutes. Djokovic won the opening set in a tie-break, but Struff fought back to claim the second set. The match went into another tie-break in the decider, where Struff held his nerve and sealed his first-ever victory over Djokovic in nine meetings. He also produced an impressive serving performance, hitting 27 aces.
The defeat has dealt a significant blow to Djokovic's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. He currently stands 11th in the Race to Turin, 319 points behind Rafael Jodar, who occupies the final qualifying position. With the Paris Masters being his remaining opportunity to earn crucial points, Djokovic faces a challenging task. The loss also ended his chance to add another title in Basel and equal Roger Federer's career tally of 103 ATP titles this week. Djokovic currently has 102 tour-level titles.
