A significant development has taken place towards ending the four-year-long Russia-Ukraine war. US President Donald Trump revealed that the two countries are closer than ever before to a peace agreement. However, he clarified that negotiations on some key issues, including the Donbas region, are still complex, and therefore, the possibility of the agreement failing cannot be completely ruled out.
During a meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida, a 20-point peace plan was extensively discussed. Both leaders agreed that some sensitive issues still remain regarding the end of the war. They revealed that the fate of Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, security guarantees for Ukraine to prevent future attacks from Moscow, and control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant are among the main obstacles to the negotiations. Trump stated that clarity on whether a peace agreement is possible will emerge in the coming weeks. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the US support in these efforts and declared that Ukraine is ready for peace.
