In a major development, nearly 9 million voters have reportedly been removed from the electoral rolls in West Bengal during the ongoing revision process. Though the Election Commission of India is yet to make an official announcement, available data suggests that out of 7.66 crore voters recorded last year, around 90.83 lakh names have been deleted after scrutiny. While several names were marked as doubtful and reviewed, a significant number were ultimately removed following judicial verification.
The issue has now turned political, with Mamata Banerjee alleging that minority communities were deliberately targeted in the deletion process. She claimed that many genuine voters were removed and restored only after legal intervention. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have countered these claims, stating that the process was carried out as per rules. With elections approaching, the controversy has intensified, raising concerns among voters.
