

An appreciation programme was held to mark the achievement of the Mahalakshmi scheme in RTC, under which over 290 crore women have travelled free of cost so far, saving approximately ₹10,000 crore in travel expenses. The event was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu, Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Seethakka. MLA from Wyra M. Ramdas, former Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, RTC Managing Director Nagareddy, women IAS officers and a large number of women participated in the programme.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar stated that free bus travel for women under the Mahalakshmi scheme was launched within 48 hours of the formation of the government on December 9, 2023. He noted that crores of women have benefited from the scheme and saved significantly. He added that out of nearly 65 lakh daily passengers, women constitute a substantial share, with RTC buses operating across 97 depots covering around 35 lakh kilometres daily. He also appreciated the efforts of RTC employees, including drivers and conductors, for the success of the scheme.
Minister Seethakka highlighted that the scheme was introduced in a significant political context linked to the formation of Telangana. She reiterated that the free bus travel facility was implemented within 48 hours of the formation of the people’s governance. She urged women to counter misinformation spread by some groups regarding the scheme. She further stated that the government is prioritizing women’s economic empowerment through loans, small businesses and self-employment opportunities. Special schemes are being implemented for women’s welfare and the government is committed to fulfilling its remaining promises in the future.
