

Senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the new Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). She will take charge as the first woman Commissioner of the country’s richest civic body. The appointment comes as the tenure of the outgoing Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, concluded today.
A 1995-batch IAS officer, Ashwini Bhide began her career in Kolhapur. She later served as Chief Executive Officer of the Nagpur and Sindhudurg Zilla Parishads. She has also held several key positions at Raj Bhavan and has been playing a significant role in Mumbai’s civic administration in recent years. As the Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), she contributed extensively to the expansion of the city’s metro network.
Notably, she led the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project, overcoming multiple challenges such as tunnel construction, land acquisition and rehabilitation. Under her leadership, the prestigious Colaba–SEEPZ corridor project progressed successfully. Due to her significant contributions, she earned recognition as the “Metro Woman of Mumbai,” with her leadership in executing this major infrastructure project receiving widespread appreciation.
