A heartbreaking accident in Sydney has claimed the life of a pregnant Indian woman, leaving her family and community in deep shock. 33-year-old Samanvitha Dhareshwar, who was eight months pregnant and just weeks away from delivering her second child, died after a severe collision last week.
According to police, Samanvitha was out for an evening walk with her husband and three-year-old son in Hornsby around 8 PM when the incident occurred. A Kia Carnival had slowed down to let the family cross a footpath, but a speeding BMW rammed into it from behind.
The impact pushed the Kia forward, hitting Samanvitha as she was stepping past the entrance of a car park. She suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Westmead Hospital, where doctors were unable to save her or her unborn child.
The BMW was driven by 19-year-old Aaron Papazoglu, a P-plate driver on a provisional licence. Police confirmed that both drivers escaped unhurt. It is still unclear whether her husband or child suffered injuries.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Samanvitha worked as an IT systems analyst, specializing in business application support, and was employed as a test analyst at Alsco Uniforms.
Police later arrested Papazoglu at his home in Wahroonga. He now faces multiple charges including dangerous driving causing death, negligent driving causing death, and causing the loss of a foetus. His bail was denied due to the seriousness of the offences.
Authorities indicated he may be prosecuted under Zoe’s Law, introduced in New South Wales in 2022, which allows harsher penalties when an unborn child dies due to reckless or negligent driving potentially adding up to three extra years to the sentence.
