HYDRA has turned its attention to Durgam Cheruvu in Madhapur following complaints of foul smell caused by the direct inflow of sewage and the spread of water hyacinth. Acting on media reports and public grievances, HYDRA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath inspected the lake on Tuesday to assess the reasons behind the large-scale spread of hyacinth. He expressed serious concern over sewage being diverted into the lake through stormwater drains despite the presence of sewage treatment plants (STPs).
The Commissioner stated that lack of coordination among agencies such as GHMC, Water Board, Irrigation Department, Raheja Mindspace, and STP operating agencies was responsible for the worsening condition of the lake. He directed officials to ensure all sewage is routed to STPs and instructed them to send treated water samples to the Pollution Control Board for testing. Later, during a review meeting with all concerned departments, he ordered immediate steps, including pipeline diversion works, to prevent sewage from entering the lake and suggested digging a canal to stop wastewater from nearby IT establishments from flowing into Durgam Cheruvu.
