The Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday issued a notification announcing the appointment of five new judges to the Supreme Court of India. The appointees include senior advocate V. Mohana, Justice Sri Chandrashekhar (currently Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Justice Sheel Nagu (Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court), and Justice Arun Palli (Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court).
These names were recently recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium led by the Chief Justice of India. Among them, V. Mohana is the only senior advocate. She graduated from Coimbatore Law College in 1988 as part of its first five-year law batch. She trained under senior advocates Indu Malhotra and C.S. Vaidyanathan and later began independent practice in the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court after clearing the Advocate-on-Record exam in 1996. She has worked alongside prominent legal figures such as Kapil Sibal, K.K. Venugopal, P. Chidambaram, Arun Jaitley, and Andhyarujina. She was designated as a senior advocate on April 23, 2015. With her elevation, the number of women judges in the Supreme Court rises to two.
