Google has achieved a significant milestone under its ambitious Project Suncatcher by successfully running its Gemma 4 AI model on a prototype satellite in space. The company reportedly received the first response from the satellite back on Earth, marking an important step towards operating artificial intelligence systems beyond the planet. The breakthrough was made possible through a prototype satellite launched on October 1.
Interestingly, the satellite’s first response to Earth came in the form of a haiku, a short traditional Japanese poem. The experiment demonstrates the potential of running AI models directly in space and communicating their outputs back to Earth. Google is planning to take the initiative further, with the goal of building a networked AI infrastructure in space by 2027. The project could open new possibilities for space-based computing and AI applications.
