Protests by INDIA bloc leaders over alleged vote theft and against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar have continued. As part of their campaign, opposition leaders organised a public mock impeachment programme at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi. The Congress held a mock parliamentary session under the chairpersonship of former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. Leaders from various states participated in the event, during which Kharge moved a resolution seeking the impeachment of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
Kharge alleged that the BJP had been conspiring to retain power since 2014. He accused Gyanesh Kumar of facilitating voter deletions and alleged vote theft under the protection provided by the 2023 law governing the appointment of election commissioners. Kharge also claimed that the level of protection given to the CEC was not available even to the President or the Chief Justice of India. The INDIA bloc’s key demands include repealing the 2023 law, Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, an immediate halt to the SIR process, restoration of deleted voter names and the use of paper ballots for all elections. MP Shashi Tharoor said the programme had to be held outside Parliament after notices submitted by opposition parties against the CEC were not accepted in either House.
