Several companies are increasingly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve productivity and streamline their operations. However, the rising costs of developing and operating AI systems are becoming a major concern, prompting businesses to explore ways to reduce expenses. Tesla and xAI chief Elon Musk has also expressed concern over the high cost of running Grok, the AI chatbot available on his social media platform X. Responding to a user’s complaint about weekly Grok usage limits being exhausted quickly, Musk acknowledged that operating the chatbot involves substantial expenses. He said the company spends more on running the service than it currently earns from it. To prevent server costs from rising further, the company is enforcing stricter usage limits for users.
Meanwhile, borrowing by major US technology companies to fund AI-related investments has reportedly increased significantly. According to an SBI Research report, the combined debt of leading technology companies, including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and Tesla, rose from around $399 billion in 2025 to approximately $578 billion by mid-2026. This represents an increase of nearly 45 per cent, equivalent to around ₹54 lakh crore. The growing financial commitments highlight the enormous investments required to develop AI infrastructure, operate advanced models and expand computing capacity. As companies continue to compete in the AI sector, managing operational expenses and debt is becoming an important challenge.
