China-based neurotechnology startup BrainCo is positioning itself as a major challenger to Elon Musk's Neuralink by focusing on non-invasive Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology. Unlike Neuralink's implant-based approach, BrainCo is developing wearable devices that interpret brain signals without requiring surgery. Founded in 2015 as a spin-off from Harvard Innovation Labs, the company has introduced products including bionic hands, sleep aid devices, and BCI-powered neurotherapy headsets for neurological conditions such as ADHD, autism and insomnia. It is also developing a brain-controlled weight management solution expected to reach the market by 2027 or 2028.
BrainCo recently secured 2 billion yuan (about $280 million) in funding and is leveraging proprietary sensors and AI-powered algorithms to improve brain signal decoding. The company plans to expand into consumer electronics while licensing its BCI platform to other technology firms. Alongside startups such as StairMed, NeuroXess and Gestala, BrainCo is helping strengthen China's position in the rapidly evolving BCI sector. The Chinese government has designated BCI as a strategic future industry, providing policy support, insurance coverage and research collaboration to accelerate innovation.
