Shubman Gill faced a major shock on Saturday when the BCCI announced India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. His omission surprised many because Gill was recently promoted as the T20 vice-captain and was given the responsibility of opening the innings with Abhishek Sharma. This leadership upgrade had signaled strong backing from team management, making his exclusion unexpected.
However, reports reveal that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee grew increasingly worried about Gill’s declining form in T20Is. Despite multiple opportunities at the top of the order, Gill struggled to convert starts and failed to produce impactful performances. With the World Cup approaching, selectors felt the team needed a consistent and aggressive opener who could complement India’s attacking approach.
As a result, the second opening slot was reassigned to Sanju Samson, who has been in impressive form and offers flexibility with both batting and wicketkeeping. While Gill’s omission has sparked debate among fans and experts, selectors believe the decision was necessary to strengthen India’s prospects in the tournament. The ball is now in Gill’s court to regain form and earn his place back in the national side.
