Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has received significant relief from the Supreme Court in her bid to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. The apex court declined to stay the Delhi High Court's order that allowed her to compete in the trials scheduled for May 30 and 31. The court observed that asking her to withdraw from the competition at this stage would not be appropriate, considering the circumstances and her contributions to Indian sports.
The case reached the Supreme Court after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) challenged the Delhi High Court’s decision. While allowing Vinesh to participate in the trials, the Supreme Court issued notices on WFI’s petition and scheduled further hearing for next week. At the same time, the bench expressed concern over judicial intervention in sports selection matters, stating that courts should be cautious while dealing with issues that could affect national and international sporting schedules. However, the court clarified that Vinesh would be allowed to compete until a final decision is taken.
