In the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 being held in Zimbabwe, defending champions India registered a thrilling 18-run victory over Bangladesh (via the DLS method) in a Group B match played on January 17. Despite repeated rain interruptions, the Indian youngsters delivered a strong performance to secure their second consecutive win and move to the top of the points table.
After losing the toss, India had a shaky start as captain Ayush Mhatre (6) and Vedanth Trivedi (0) were dismissed early. However, opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi (72) and wicketkeeper Abhignan Kundu (80) steadied the innings with responsible half-centuries. In the rain-shortened match of 49 overs, India were bowled out for 238 runs. Bangladesh bowler Al Farhad impressed with a five-wicket haul.
Chasing a revised DLS target of 165 runs in 29 overs, Bangladesh struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack and were bowled out for just 146 runs in 28.3 overs. Vihan Malhotra played a key role by taking crucial wickets. Apart from the on-field action, the match also grabbed attention due to a controversial moment at the toss, where the two captains did not shake hands, sparking discussions about sportsmanship.
