Indian star cricketer Virat Kohli ended the year 2025 on a remarkable note. He showcased his superb form in the ODI series against South Africa, scoring two centuries and an unbeaten half-century. Carrying this momentum into 2026, Kohli is now close to achieving three rare milestones.
First, in the IPL, Kohli needs just 339 more runs to become the first batter in the league’s history to score 9,000 runs. At present, he is the leading run-scorer in IPL history with 8,681 runs from 259 innings. Notably, Kohli has represented only Royal Challengers Bengaluru throughout his entire IPL career. Rohit Sharma currently stands second on the list.
The second milestone is in ODIs, where Kohli is closing in on 15,000 runs. He requires another 443 runs to reach the landmark. So far, he has scored 14,557 runs in 296 innings. Until now, Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to have crossed the 15,000-run mark in ODIs.
The third record relates to international cricket overall. Across all three formats, Kohli has accumulated 27,975 runs. With just 42 more runs, he will surpass Kumar Sangakkara and become the second-highest run-scorer in international cricket. He has a strong chance of achieving this feat in the ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11.
