Indian star badminton player and Olympic medalist P. V. Sindhu has achieved another rare honour. Already elected as Chairperson of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Athletes’ Commission, she has now also been chosen as a member of the BWF Council. With this appointment, Sindhu continues her career as an active player while also becoming a voting member of the highest decision-making body in world badminton.
She recently attended the annual general meeting held in Horsens, Denmark, where she participated for the first time as a Council member. Sindhu’s appointment is expected to bring greater attention to issues faced by players worldwide. She is likely to work on key areas such as prize money distribution for world championships and reducing tournament pressure on elite players. At a time when continuous tournaments are leading to rising injuries, her representation is expected to play an important role in protecting athletes’ interests.
Reacting to the responsibility, Sindhu said it was an honour to take charge as a BWF Council member. She stated that she would represent the voices of players from across the world on the BWF platform and added that badminton has given her a lot in life. She expressed happiness at getting an opportunity to give back to the sport. Board members believe her experience will be highly valuable in shaping a stronger future for badminton.
