Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could make significant changes to their squad ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction, with the franchise reportedly reviewing the future of young players Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. CSK acquired both players for Rs. 14.2 crore each at the previous auction. However, while Kartik impressed with his batting, Prashant failed to deliver the expected results in his debut season. This has reportedly prompted the management to reconsider retaining the young all-rounder. CSK had invested heavily in the duo as part of its strategy to strengthen the squad with young talent, but Prashant’s performance has raised questions about his place in the team.
The 20-year-old left-arm spin all-rounder from Uttar Pradesh featured in six matches in IPL 2026, scoring 90 runs in five innings without taking a wicket. His highest score was 43, which came against Bengaluru. In contrast, Rajasthan-born wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma scored 295 runs in 11 matches at an average of 32.77. His 71-run knock against Lucknow Super Giants further strengthened his case for retention. CSK is reportedly inclined to retain Kartik, although no final decision has been made on either player. The franchise currently has Rs. 2.4 crore in its purse, which could rise to Rs. 7.4 crore following an annual increase of Rs. 5 crore in the salary cap. Reports suggest CSK may release Prashant and attempt to buy him back at a lower price during the auction to free up funds for other requirements.
