India is set to face New Zealand in a five-match ODI series, with the opening match scheduled to be played in Auckland on Wednesday. Led by captain Shubman Gill, Team India has already begun intensive preparations for the series. Senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also gearing up to take the field. Former India cricketer Cheteshwar Pujara believes Kohli has a better chance of scoring centuries in the series than Rohit. He explained that Rohit’s primary responsibility would be to make the most of the powerplay and score quickly. Although Rohit could also aim for a century, Pujara feels Kohli’s position at No. 3 gives him a better opportunity to build a long innings and reach the three-figure mark.
Pujara also noted that New Zealand could enjoy a slight advantage because the home conditions are likely to suit their players. He said Indian openers may have to adjust their approach according to the pitch conditions rather than rely only on aggressive batting. Pujara expects India to make a strong start and gain an advantage by winning the first three matches. He added that the series could be closely contested and warned that rain might affect the fixtures, with even a match washout being a possibility.
