A new chapter has been written in Formula One history as Mercedes' young driver Kimi Antonelli created a sensation by becoming the world champion at just 20 years of age. He became the youngest driver ever to win the F1 world title. Antonelli secured the championship after finishing third in Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton claimed the first and second positions in the race, respectively. Until now, the record for the youngest F1 world champion belonged to German racing legend Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 133 days old when he won his maiden title in 2010. Antonelli achieved this remarkable feat in just his second F1 season.
Antonelli became emotional as soon as he learned that he had secured the world championship. He initially remained silent on the team radio, seemingly unable to find the words to express his feelings. Moments later, he celebrated by shouting, “We did it! We did it!” His victory is also a landmark moment for Italian motorsport. Antonelli became the first Italian to win the Formula One world championship since Alberto Ascari achieved the feat in 1953, ending Italy's 73-year wait. He also became the first driver born in the 21st century to win the F1 world title.
