Iran has proposed reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States agrees to its key conditions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Araghchi explained that discussions with Qatari mediators had helped reduce the proposed implementation period from the earlier timeline to two days. Under the proposal, Washington would take the required steps on the first day, followed by the reopening of the waterway and restoration of navigation on the second day. However, the discussions have not yet resulted in a final agreement.
Tehran’s demands reportedly include lifting US sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, reducing American military presence in the region, restoring exemptions related to Iranian oil exports and releasing frozen Iranian funds, including assets held in Qatar. Iran is also seeking recognition of shipping routes discussed with Oman. Qatar is continuing its mediation efforts, while Iran awaits Washington’s response. The proposal could pave the way for further negotiations between the two countries, but the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains dependent on an agreement.
