Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has suffered a major setback following a massive cyberattack. In the aftermath of the incident, customers began withdrawing their funds in large numbers, resulting in crypto assets worth around $3.6 billion leaving the platform. This amounts to more than ₹35,000 crore in Indian currency. The incident has triggered concerns across the cryptocurrency market, with investors closely monitoring the situation.
According to reports, crypto assets worth approximately $6.3 billion were stolen in the cyberattack targeting Binance. US investigative agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), along with blockchain experts, have reportedly linked the attack to hackers based in North Korea. Following the incident, Binance temporarily suspended customer withdrawals on Thursday to assess the situation and investigate how the attack occurred, the extent of the losses and possible security vulnerabilities. The company gradually resumed withdrawals from Sunday. However, once the service became available again, several customers moved their crypto assets to other wallets, leading to significant outflows. Binance also acknowledged the withdrawals on social media, stating that they initially surged before gradually declining.
Binance has assured customers that they will not bear the financial losses resulting from the incident. The company said it was using its own funds, emergency reserves and insurance funds to compensate for the stolen crypto assets. It further stated that it had already covered nearly 95 per cent of the value of the stolen assets. Binance has maintained that it will absorb the financial impact of the incident and will not pass the burden on to its customers.
