As technology continues to evolve rapidly, shopping habits among Indian consumers are also undergoing significant changes. Millennials are emerging as leaders in adopting AI-powered shopping tools. According to a recent report released by global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company, AI shopping adoption among Indian millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, has reached 84%. This is higher than the adoption rate among Gen Z consumers, born between 1997 and 2012, which stands at 74%.
India has secured the second position globally in the adoption of AI-powered shopping, with China leading the rankings. While the global average stands at 53%, AI shopping adoption in India has reached 76%. Indian consumers are increasingly using AI tools not just to search for products but also to compare items, evaluate options, make informed purchase decisions and even complete payments. This highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence in the country's online shopping ecosystem.
According to McKinsey's Agentic Commerce Consumer Survey, AI shopping adoption varies across different generations. Millennials lead with 84%, followed by Gen Z and Gen X at 74% each, while Baby Boomers account for 56%. These figures indicate that India is moving rapidly towards agentic commerce. In this emerging shopping model, AI agents go beyond following user instructions by independently analysing information, comparing products and assisting with purchasing decisions. With its strong digital payments and e-commerce ecosystem, India is increasingly embracing this new technology-driven shopping experience.
