Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has urged the BCCI selectors to bring Mohammed Shami back into the national side across all formats, stating that the veteran pacer is “fit and bowling exceptionally well.” Shami was left out of India’s squad for the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa, sparking debate about his future in international cricket.
Ganguly highlighted Shami’s recent performances in the Ranji Trophy, where he picked up 15 wickets in three matches for Bengal, including match-winning spells in two games. “He is bowling like the Shami we all know — fit, fast, and impactful. I see no reason why he shouldn’t be part of India’s Test, ODI, and T20 setups,” Ganguly said, while also acknowledging that communication between the bowler and the selection panel must be ongoing.
Despite recovering from ankle surgery earlier this year, Shami remains one of India’s most experienced and skilled pacers, having finished as the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup with 24 wickets at an average of 10.70. With no Test matches scheduled for India in the next six months, questions linger over whether Shami’s last red-ball appearance — the WTC Final against Australia in 2023 — might mark the end of an era, even as Ganguly’s statement reignites hopes for a comeback.
