India's celebrations after winning the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup have quickly turned into disappointment following back-to-back series defeats under new captain Shreyas Iyer. After losing the Ireland series, Team India suffered a humiliating 4-0 whitewash in England and also lost the fifth T20 in Southampton, slipping from the No.1 position in the ICC T20 rankings. The poor results have reportedly prompted the team management and selectors to begin planning a major squad overhaul with the 2028 T20 World Cup in mind.
Three players, in particular, failed to make an impact during the tour. Young opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi struggled to convert his opportunities after making his international debut, while experienced all-rounder Washington Sundar endured a disappointing run with both bat and ball. Mumbai all-rounder Suryansh Shedge, who earned a call-up due to injuries, also failed to impress in the chances he received. With increased competition for places, all three now face an uncertain future and may need outstanding performances in domestic cricket and the IPL to return to India's long-term plans.
