Barcelona suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat against Sevilla in the La Liga on Sunday, with Lamine Yamal out injured and Robert Lewandowski missing a crucial penalty that could have equalized the match. This is their second consecutive loss, following a midweek defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, putting them in a difficult position going into the international break.
The result keeps Real Madrid at the top of the table, two points ahead of previously unbeaten Barcelona.
“We play for an incredible club and for supporters who are hurting after this defeat. But we have to accept it and look forward,” said Barcelona coach Hansi Flick. “It’s important that we stick together. We are a good team and when we return from the break, we’ll fight for every title.”
Sevilla defeated Barcelona in La Liga for the first time in 10 years and now sits sixth in the standings.
Lamine Yamal suffered a groin injury against PSG and will be sidelined for 2-3 weeks.
In the 74th minute, Alejandro Balde earned a penalty for Barcelona, but Lewandowski missed it, shooting wide left after noticing Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos move in his direction.
Isaac Romero was Sevilla’s star, scoring once and assisting another. He was fouled by Ronald Araujo, resulting in a penalty converted by Alexis Sanchez in the 13th minute. Romero then doubled Sevilla’s lead in the 36th minute after a counterattack.
Marcus Rashford pulled one back for Barcelona with his first La Liga goal since joining on loan from Manchester United. But after Lewandowski’s miss, Jose Angel Carmona and Akor Adams added two more goals for Sevilla in the final minutes.
Barcelona had won their previous seven matches against Sevilla but now faces serious questions about their form.
