The central government has announced that the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, will begin from the 2029 elections after proposed amendments. While the government presents it as a step toward women’s empowerment, it has also triggered debate on whether it is a genuine reform or a political strategy ahead of upcoming elections.
The 106th Constitutional Amendment, passed in 2023, guarantees 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, linked to delimitation and census completion. However, delays in the census and delimitation process have pushed implementation further. The new proposal seeks to increase Lok Sabha seats and remove the dependency on census data, raising questions from opposition parties about timing and intent. Critics argue that the move appears politically driven, while supporters see it as a major step toward increasing women’s representation in governance.
